Out after watching AVATAR on IMAX, the buzz around was "Wow, what an experience". Is this the dawn of the next generation in movie technology and experience ? But being a techno, I didn't stop with that and I did some reading and browsing to know more on stereoscopic technology, here I share a few.

Though there is a much expanded research on the Stereoscopy technology, to lay it simple and brief, it is derived from the term Stereo Vision, which in other words can be defined as Depth Perception. Humans use both eyes which actually view different perspectives of the same picture, when processed by brain; it creates a sense of depth. Using this principle, the technology of capturing two perspectives of the same image on camera and rendering them parallel and filtering them so that both eyes see their respective sides which create an illusion of depth can be termed as 3D Vision or Stereoscopy.

Since the invention of this Animation technology there existed 3D photography, 3D paintings etc, various methods and techniques were used from time to time and a most common viewer or gadget people relate to 3D viewing is the 3D eye wear (polarized glasses) which has two different color filters and will view only one image on every eye corresponding to the two images projected and super imposed by the projector on the same screen thus creating the 3D vision.

We should also not forget the cutting edge technologies developed by the companies for the hardware to support stereoscopy, Monitors, Masks, Helmets, Large screens, Glasses, Game Consoles, Graphic processors and cards, 3D film cameras etc all support this technology. This surely has broadened the scope of stereoscopy even for home viewing.

The trend later carried forward from live action films to Animation films thus creating the real 3D feel with the animated characters, off late leading Animation & Visual Effects studios in India and with their counterparts in US and other parts of the world are working together on major projects on S-3D and also the latest talk being stereoscopy games. Today's gamers can enjoy well over 400 game titles in S-3D when using an appropriately equipped PC and one of the S-3D capable monitors. Very recent developments include the ability to play S-3D games on gaming consoles and a 3D-capable TV, the release of the 3D game Avatar, as well as the release of the first 3D

With increased options in the various 3D and compositing tools to generate the S effect and with advanced technological hardware, there sure going to create, like most recently seen in James Cameron's "Avatar", Robert Zemeckis' and "A Christmas Carol" , and innovations in 3D Stereo which are conquering not only movie theatres, but even television and change other aspects of our lives in the way we Watch, Play, Feel…The Next Generation - S-3D
